YFU Australia and New Zealand was proud to be represented at The PIE Live Asia Pacific on the Gold Coast, where our National Director, James Crimp, joined leaders from across the international education sector to discuss the transformative power of global learning and cultural exchange.
As conversations throughout the event highlighted, international education is often discussed in terms of mobility, destinations, enrolments, and academic opportunities. Yet those who have experienced it firsthand know that its true impact reaches far beyond these measures.
At YFU Student Exchange, we see this every day.
When a student leaves home to live in another country, they gain far more than a new school experience. They learn to navigate unfamiliar situations, communicate across cultures, and develop confidence in their ability to adapt to a changing world. They discover new perspectives while sharing their own, building friendships and connections that can last a lifetime.
The impact extends beyond the student. Host families open their homes and gain a deeper understanding of another culture. Schools become more globally minded. Communities grow stronger through the exchange of ideas, traditions, and experiences. What begins as one exchange can create a ripple effect that touches countless lives.
One of the most powerful aspects of international education is its ability to build understanding between people who may otherwise never have met. In a world that can often feel divided, cultural exchange creates opportunities for empathy, curiosity, and genuine human connection.
These themes resonated strongly throughout The PIE Live Asia Pacific. Among the many meaningful conversations, there were reminders that the value of international education cannot be measured solely through statistics or programme numbers. Its greatest achievements are often personal: a young person discovering their potential, a family gaining a new perspective, or a conversation that challenges assumptions and creates lasting understanding.
For more than 70 years, YFU has believed that cultural exchange is one of the most effective ways to foster global citizenship and peace. Every year, students return home with new skills, broader worldviews, and a greater appreciation for the diversity that exists across our global community.
As educators, exchange organisations, and international partners continue to work together, the mission remains clear: to create opportunities that bring people together and help young people become confident, compassionate global citizens.
International education does not simply change where someone studies. It changes how they see the world, how they understand others, and how they understand themselves.
And that is why its impact lasts long after the journey home.
