Riga, Latvia’s capital, is one of Northern Europe’s most architecturally remarkable cities, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed Art Nouveau centre that has been called the ‘Paris of the North.’ But Latvia beyond Riga is equally compelling: Baltic Sea beaches, ancient hill forts, dense forests, and a folk culture of singing and dancing that is literally on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
Latvian family life is warm, nature-oriented, and shaped by a culture with deep roots in folk traditions, seasonal celebrations, and a close relationship with the land. The Song and Dance Festival (Dziesmu un deju svētki), held every five years, is one of Europe’s largest and most moving cultural events – a tradition that dates to 1873 and in which a significant proportion of the Latvian population participates as performers.
Latvians are initially reserved with strangers, a Baltic characteristic but deeply warm and loyal with people within their circle. The natural environment is extraordinary for a small country. Seasons are distinct and significant: summer brings long days and outdoor festivals; winter brings snow, ice skating, and a different kind of beauty.

Latvian secondary schools cover students aged 15–18 and run September to June. The curriculum covers Latvian Language, Mathematics, Sciences, History, Geography, Foreign Languages (English and typically Russian or German), Arts, and Physical Education. Latvian schools are known for their strong music education. Latvia has an extraordinary choral tradition and many schools have active choirs and music ensembles. Academic standards are solid and the school environment is generally formal and structured.
High schools in Latvia are known locally as “vidusskola” and are the centre of teenage life. In addition to traditional subjects, students enjoy a range of sports, including basketball, and cultural experiences such as music, craft, and drama.
The school year in Latvia starts in early September and runs through to the end of May or early June, divided into two semesters.
Learning Latvian before exchange is advantageous, but not required.
Living with a Latvian host family provides a unique window into the local culture and daily life. Families in Latvia enjoy spending time together. Many families who live in Urban areas also own country cottages for weekend getaways and beachside holidays.
Meals are a time for gathering and sharing, with traditional Latvian cuisine offering a mix of flavours influenced by the country’s history and geographical location. Food is fresh, locally grown and organic.
Teenagers are expected to help with light household chores and keep their bedrooms tidy. After their studying is done teenagers enjoy cafe outings, movies and parties with friends as well as windsurfing, canoeing and bicycle touring.
No prior Latvian is required. Latvian is a Baltic language ancient, linguistically distinctive, and not closely related to most other European languages. YFU provides pre-departure language preparation. English is widely spoken among Latvian young people, so immersion requires conscious effort to use Latvian actively.
