Going on student exchange is an exciting decision — but there are also several steps involved before you board the plane. Starting early gives you time to make informed decisions, complete each stage properly and prepare for your time abroad without unnecessary last-minute pressure.
Why should you apply early?
1. Give yourself time to explore your options
You might already know exactly where you want to go. Or perhaps you’re choosing between several countries and aren’t sure which one is right for you.
Starting early gives you more time to explore YFU’s destinations, program lengths, eligibility requirements, costs and departure dates. YFU offers exchange programs across more than 25 destinations, with programs ranging from a few months to a full year.
The earlier you start, the more time you have to ask questions and make a decision that works for you and your family.
2. The application is a process — not just a form
Applying for exchange involves several stages. After attending an information session, you complete an initial application, take part in an interview and, if successful, complete a more detailed full application.
Some of these steps require time to review information and coordinate with YFU’s overseas partners. Starting early allows you to move through the process at a comfortable pace rather than trying to complete everything close to your departure date.
3. You’ll have more time to prepare
Getting accepted is only the beginning of your exchange journey.
Once your full application has been received and your placement is confirmed, YFU begins the next stages of preparing you for departure. This includes pre-departure orientation and access to YFU’s Departure Lounge, where you can prepare for your adventure ahead.
There are also practical things to organise, such as your passport, visa requirements, school arrangements, packing and saying goodbye to friends and family.
Starting early means you can focus on getting excited rather than worrying about what still needs to be done!
4. It gives you time to make important decisions with your family
A student exchange is a big decision, and it’s one that involves the whole family.
Attending a YFU Discovery Session is a great first step for students and parents to learn more about what exchange involves, including the application process, support, costs, inclusions, departure dates and deadlines.
Having these conversations early gives everyone time to ask questions, understand the commitment and plan financially for the experience.
5. You can enjoy the journey before you even leave
One of the most exciting parts of exchange is the anticipation.
There are new questions to explore, a language to learn, cultural differences to discover and so much to look forward to. Starting early means your exchange journey begins long before you arrive at the airport.
And remember: you don’t have to have everything figured out before you contact YFU. That’s what the application and information process is there for.
So, what does the YFU application process look like?
Ready to get started? Here’s the six-step journey.
Step 1: Attend a YFU Discovery Session
Join a live online information session with your parent or guardian to learn more about student exchange.
You’ll find out about the exchange experience, eligibility requirements, destinations, support, costs and the application process — and have the opportunity to ask questions.
As an added bonus, registering for and attending a live online Discovery Session automatically gives you $100 off your program fee, subject to conditions.
Step 2: Complete your Initial Application
Once you’re ready to take the next step, complete YFU’s Initial Application. It takes around 10 minutes and gets the process underway.
YFU will review your application and, where appropriate, liaise with the overseas YFU partner to arrange conditional acceptance.
An application fee of $100 is payable at this stage and is refundable if you are not accepted.
Step 3: Have your interview
Once conditional acceptance has been confirmed, YFU will arrange an interview at a mutually convenient time.
The interview is an opportunity to learn more about you, your motivations for going on exchange and your ability to navigate the ups and downs that come with living in another country and culture.
There are no perfect answers — YFU wants to get to know the real you.
Step 4: Complete your Full Application
After your interview, you’ll be invited to complete the Full Application.
This application is more detailed and helps YFU get to know you and your needs better. At this stage, a $750 deposit is payable, with the remaining program fee paid in instalments according to the payment schedule.

Step 5: Receive confirmation of your placement
Once YFU receives your Full Application, you’ll receive confirmation of your placement and your details will be sent to your host country so they can begin looking for your host family.
This is when your exchange adventure starts to feel very real!
Step 6: Prepare for departure
Finally, it’s time to get ready.
YFU will provide access to the Departure Lounge and organise your pre-departure orientation to help you prepare for life overseas.
From learning about your host culture to getting practical arrangements organised, this is your time to prepare for one of the biggest adventures of your life.
