Student exchange program to Argentina for Australian & NZ students

Hola! Live & Study in Argentina

Argentina has long been one of YFU’s most beloved South American destinations, and it consistently produces some of the most passionate alumni of any exchange program worldwide. The country combines European architectural elegance with South American passion – tango, football, Patagonian wilderness, gaucho culture, and a café society that treats conversation as a serious art form.

For Australian and New Zealand students, Argentina offers a cultural experience genuinely unlike anything at home: a Spanish-speaking country with deep European roots, a strong sense of national identity, and a family culture that will draw you in completely from the first day.

Life as an exchange student in Argentina

Argentine family life is close-knit, warm, and often centred around late evenings, long meals, and strong opinions about football. Dinner rarely happens before 9pm, weekends extend into Sunday evenings, and family members check in on each other constantly. For students used to more independent Australian or NZ household structures, this closeness takes some adjustment – but most exchange students come to love it deeply.

Spanish is the language of the exchange. No prior Spanish is required, and full immersion accelerates learning quickly. Argentine Spanish has its own distinctive accent and vocabulary (the voseo form rather than tú), which makes your Spanish uniquely authentic once you return home.

Argentine cities – particularly Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza, and Rosario – have rich cultural lives with strong youth music, arts, and sports scenes. Regional placements offer a very different Argentina: Patagonia, the northwest, and the pampas all have their own distinct identity.

Schooling in Argentina

The Argentinean school system is divided into 3 levels: Initial level or Kindergarten (3-5 years old); Primaria or Primary level (6-12 years old); Secundaria, High school or Secondary level (13-17 years old). There are public and private schools, and you will be attending one or the other, depending on your host family.

In high schools, there are from 12 to 15 subjects, all of them compulsory. In the last 3 years of high school, students choose which field they want: Humanistic, Science, Business or Technical areas (each one with specific subjects).

Argentine secondary schools (Escuela Secundaria) cover students aged 13–17 and run March to December, aligned with the southern hemisphere calendar. The curriculum typically covers Spanish Language, Mathematics, Natural and Social Sciences, History, Geography, Arts, and Physical Education, with some variation by school type. Argentine schools are known for their strong humanities and social sciences focus.

Language RequirementS

Learning Spanish before exchange is advantageous, but not required.

Family Life in Argentina

In Argentina, family life is central to society, often characterized by large, close-knit families that gather frequently for meals, celebrations, and holidays. Exchange students thrive in this inclusive atmosphere, where weekends and holidays are filled with lively family barbecues (asados), passionate discussions about football, and shared moments that build strong, enduring bonds. This communal spirit extends beyond the immediate family, inviting students to experience Argentine hospitality’s warmth and welcoming nature.

Volunteer Programs

Argentina offers a Volunteer Service Program for a year or a semester, during which you will live with a local host family who will be a big part of your everyday life. At the same time, you are placed with an NGO (non-government organisation) as a volunteer. It is an extraordinary opportunity to impact the world while transforming your own perspective.

Programs focus on critical global issues such as the environment, malnutrition, social development, culture and child care. You will meet people from all over the world, create friendships and be immersed in Argentinian culture while making a lasting impact on the communities you serve. Take the first step to make a lasting impact, and contact us to discover more.

This program is available to people 18 years and over.

Argentina Exchange FAQ's

We’ve got some quick answers to common questions to help get you started with your Argentina Student Exchange Program.

No prior Spanish is required. YFU provides pre-departure language preparation and full immersion in a host family and school quickly builds conversational ability. Argentine Spanish has its own distinctive accent and vocabulary — a rewarding variation to learn.

Warm, social, and quite different from Australian or NZ household norms. Dinner is typically served after 9pm, weekends revolve around family gatherings, and you’ll be treated as a genuine family member from day one.

Argentina follows a southern hemisphere school calendar, running approximately March to December. This aligns well with the Australian academic year and makes Argentina one of the easier South American destinations to fit into existing school schedules.

Not necessarily. YFU places students across Argentina – in cities like Córdoba, Mendoza, Rosario, and Tucumán, as well as smaller regional towns. Placements are matched to your profile, not just your first preference.

Argentina has a distinctive culture – a blend of European immigrant heritage, South American passion, and strong literary and artistic traditions. The Spanish spoken here (with the voseo accent and rioplatense vocabulary) is uniquely Argentine and highly valued in professional contexts.

Yes, students participating in Academic Semester or Academic Year programs are required to obtain a visa. As part of the application process, all students must attend an in person visa interview in Sydney or Auckland.

I did an exchange year with YFU to Switzerland in 2024-2025, and it was the best experience of my life. The support I received from YFU throughout the whole process was amazing and made everything seem a lot less overwhelming than it felt at times. I got to make best friends all over the world and learn a new language. I highly recommend YFU to anyone thinking about doing an exchange!!

Our family hosted a Norwegian student for a year through YFU. The student fitted in with the family so well, and we received all the support we needed from YFU. We now have a lifelong friend in Norway

Our daughter Hannah has travelled to the USA with YFU for 12 months, living with a local family and attending high school there. She has loved every minute of the experience. Her host family welcomed her as one of their own, and she has had incredible opportunities, great experiences, and made lifelong friends. We are very grateful to YFU for making this possible.

If you are thinking about hosting an international student, this organisation is great! They do genuinely support the host family as well as the student, guiding everyone to have a positive experience in Australia. Hosting gives you the best opportunities to explore your own backyard and see it with new eyes! While all students (and host families) are different, YFU's works with them to develop their understandings and realistic expectations. YFU families come in all shapes and sizes and mine is now spreading further around the world with each young person who stays awhile in my home but much longer (maybe forever) in my thoughts and beyond.

Our family have had the privilege to host 4 young people so far. We really enjoy hosting and now have 4 new family members. We count them as sons/daughters, brothers/sisters. Our first 2 students have returned to visit us and our family has had the opportunity to visit 1 of our students and meet their family. YFU support us through the process and have always been there to help when we needed it.

We’ve now hosted two wonderful students through YFU and loved every minute. Our family has welcomed both a Norwegian and an Argentinian student, and they fitted in straight away. The support from YFU as a host family has been excellent, and we always felt comfortable reaching out with questions.

Hosting has given our children lifelong friendships — my younger son enjoyed having “sisters” at school, and my older son is even visiting our Norwegian student’s family while travelling in Europe.

Our family had a great experience with YFU Student Exchange. Our daughter participated in a "one school term" experience in Canada. She was placed with a beautiful family who provided her with a memorable experience of Canadian life and culture. So much so, she didn't want to come home. Pamela and Melanie from YFU exchange were professional and provided great communication and support through the process. They settled our nerves, with regular contact, while allowing our daughter to take responsibility of the her great adventure through different stages of the exchange. We highly recommend YFU Student Exchange to other families thinking of this experience.

Hello, My name is Asha I did an exchange to Belgium for a year when I was 15. It's pretty hard to sum up this experience because there's just so much you want to talk about, best time of my life says it pretty well! I loved meeting the other like minded teenagers from all over the world who become my family. I moved host families once due to complication in the family but after that i was placed with the most amazing family who took care of me and where so interested to learn about my country. Schooling and lifestyle was so different to my home life which just made everything so exciting and new. learning the language is hard but if you get practice before you depart you'll be fine. If your looking at this and you think this would be something for you, it isn't for everyone but encourage so much to just go for it. Live a big life even if your just 15 🙂

As a former YFU exchange student, I can say this was one of my most important experiences. YFU is a reliable, trustworthy organisation with many years of experience uniting people from all over the world.

I was an exxhange student as a youth and it changed my life, positively and irrefutably. My daughter opted to venture to Argentina of her own volition decades later with the same ideals in mind: to open her mind to a diverse and beautiful world in a quest for empathy. She, too, had a thrilling and enriching experience. I can't recommend YFU highly enough for those with an open mind seeking something far beyond the limiting back yard.
