In 1948, YFU founder Dr. Rachel Andresen witnessed the lights of Amsterdam being switched on for the first time after World War II.
The moment stayed with her. She vowed to dedicate her life to ensuring that the lights would never go out again.
Three years later, in 1951, Rachel helped bring 75 German teenagers to the United States to live with volunteer host families and attend high school. Youth For Understanding (YFU) was born. 🌍
But there was something else at the heart of YFU from the very beginning: volunteers.
As the exchange programme grew, former host families and community members stepped forward to support students, welcome new families and build local YFU communities. Volunteers became an essential part of keeping Rachel’s vision alive.
And that spirit continues today.
