Student Exchange Programs to Japan for Australian & NZ Students

Konnichiwa! Live & Study in Japan...

If you’re looking for a destination that combines ancient traditions with cutting-edge innovation, Japan may be the perfect choice for your student exchange. From the bustling streets of Tokyo to peaceful regional communities, Japan offers a fascinating blend of history, culture, technology, and everyday life unlike anywhere else in the world. As a YFU exchange student, you’ll live with a carefully selected Japanese host family, attend a local high school, and experience daily life as a member of your host community. You’ll have the opportunity to improve your Japanese language skills through full cultural immersion while building lifelong friendships and gaining a deeper understanding of one of the world’s most unique societies.

Spots are very limited and only available for a full academic year, so early application and enrolment is essential.

Life on Exchange in Japan

Japanese family life has a rhythm and structure that takes a few weeks to find your way into – and then becomes one of the most valued parts of the exchange. Households tend to be organised, considerate of shared space, and oriented around mealtimes as a point of family gathering. There is a strong culture of consideration for others (omoiyari) that shapes how Japanese families interact, and exchange students consistently describe feeling genuinely welcomed and looked after from day one.

School is a central and immersive part of the Japan exchange. Japanese high schools (kōkō) run club activities (bukatsu) before and after school — sports, music, art, calligraphy, robotics, and many others — and joining a club is one of the fastest routes to genuine friendships with Japanese students. The school day is structured and the academic pace is demanding, but exchange students are supported by teachers and classmates who are genuinely curious about life in Australia and New Zealand.

Japanese is the language of the exchange. No prior Japanese is required — YFU provides pre-departure language preparation, and immersion accelerates progress significantly. Learning to navigate a language with three writing systems (hiragana, katakana, and kanji) is one of the most stretching linguistic experiences on the YFU network, and students who lean into it return home with a language skill that stands out on any application.

Daily life in Japan varies significantly by region. Tokyo is dense, efficient, and relentlessly interesting; Kyoto is steeped in historical atmosphere; rural placements in Tohoku, Kyushu, or Shikoku offer a quieter, more traditional Japan that most tourists never encounter. Wherever your placement, the convenience of Japan’s public transport means other parts of the country are accessible during holiday periods.

Japanese Culture

Japan is famous as the birthplace of manga, anime, origami, kimonos, and samurai traditions, but there is so much more to discover. Japanese culture seamlessly combines the old and the new: one day you may visit a centuries-old temple or shrine, and the next explore the latest technology, fashion, or entertainment trends. You might spend an evening singing karaoke with friends, attend a traditional noh or kabuki performance, or participate in a local festival alongside your host family. Whether you’re drawn to Japan for its language, culture, food, education system, or future career opportunities, a YFU exchange to Japan offers an unforgettable adventure and a life-changing international experience.

Language RequirementS

Students are required to have been studying Japanese for at least 1 year prior to departure and be able to read and write Hiragana and Katakana. All applicants will be required to undergo an online interview with our Japanese partner to determine acceptance.

1-week orientation in Tokyo included, providing language instruction, cultural preparation, and essential guidance for a smooth transition into life in Japan.

About Schooling in Japan

A key part of your exchange experience in Japan will be attending a local Japanese high school and becoming part of everyday student life. School is at the heart of Japanese culture and provides one of the best opportunities to improve your language skills, make lifelong friends, and gain a deeper understanding of the country.

You will attend classes alongside Japanese students and may study a wide range of subjects including world history, mathematics, English, contemporary Japanese language, Japanese classics, chemistry, physics, geography, ethics, politics and economics, biology, music, fine arts, and physical education. Every school experience is unique, giving you a genuine insight into Japan’s education system and way of life.

Schools are carefully selected by our local partner organisation based on your age, language ability, and host family placement. Placements may be in urban, suburban, or regional communities throughout Japan, allowing students to experience different aspects of Japanese society.

Japanese schools place a strong emphasis on respect, responsibility, teamwork, and participation. Students are encouraged to become involved in school clubs and extracurricular activities, which are often one of the most rewarding aspects of the exchange experience. Popular activities include sports, music, cultural clubs, and traditional martial arts.

Japanese high schools (Kōtō Gakkō, or kōkō) cover students aged 15–18 and run from April to March, aligned with Japan’s own academic calendar. The school day typically runs from approximately 8am to 3–4pm, followed by club activities (bukatsu) that can extend to early evening. Core subjects include Japanese Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, English, Arts, and Physical Education. Academic expectations are high and the pace of instruction is brisk. Club participation is a central part of school culture — most students belong to at least one club, and exchange students are strongly encouraged to join. Japanese schools operate on a uniform system; YFU provides guidance on uniform requirements for your specific school placement.

Family

Living with a Japanese host family is one of the most rewarding parts of your exchange experience. It gives you the opportunity to become part of everyday family life, improve your Japanese language skills, and gain a deeper understanding of Japanese culture.

Students may be placed with host families anywhere in Japan, in urban, suburban, or rural communities. Host families come in many forms, including couples with or without children, single-parent families, and multi-generational households. Accommodation may be in a house, apartment, or condominium, depending on the family’s circumstances and location.

Students may share a room with a host sibling of the same gender but will always have their own bed or futon. Some students may also experience more than one host family during their exchange, providing an even broader insight into Japanese family life and culture.

No matter where you are placed, living with a Japanese host family offers an authentic and immersive experience that helps make Japan feel like home.

Japan follows its own academic calendar running April to March, different from both the Australian and northern hemisphere school years. Japanese home cooking is varied, seasonal, and typically quite different from the Japanese food available in Australia or NZ. I did an exchange year with YFU to Switzerland in 2024-2025, and it was the best experience of my life. The support I received from YFU throughout the whole process was amazing and made everything seem a lot less overwhelming than it felt at times. I got to make best friends all over the world and learn a new language. I highly recommend YFU to anyone thinking about doing an exchange!!

Our family hosted a Norwegian student for a year through YFU. The student fitted in with the family so well, and we received all the support we needed from YFU. We now have a lifelong friend in Norway

Our daughter Hannah has travelled to the USA with YFU for 12 months, living with a local family and attending high school there. She has loved every minute of the experience. Her host family welcomed her as one of their own, and she has had incredible opportunities, great experiences, and made lifelong friends. We are very grateful to YFU for making this possible.

If you are thinking about hosting an international student, this organisation is great! They do genuinely support the host family as well as the student, guiding everyone to have a positive experience in Australia. Hosting gives you the best opportunities to explore your own backyard and see it with new eyes! While all students (and host families) are different, YFU's works with them to develop their understandings and realistic expectations. YFU families come in all shapes and sizes and mine is now spreading further around the world with each young person who stays awhile in my home but much longer (maybe forever) in my thoughts and beyond.

Our family have had the privilege to host 4 young people so far. We really enjoy hosting and now have 4 new family members. We count them as sons/daughters, brothers/sisters. Our first 2 students have returned to visit us and our family has had the opportunity to visit 1 of our students and meet their family. YFU support us through the process and have always been there to help when we needed it.

We’ve now hosted two wonderful students through YFU and loved every minute. Our family has welcomed both a Norwegian and an Argentinian student, and they fitted in straight away. The support from YFU as a host family has been excellent, and we always felt comfortable reaching out with questions.

Hosting has given our children lifelong friendships — my younger son enjoyed having “sisters” at school, and my older son is even visiting our Norwegian student’s family while travelling in Europe.

Our family had a great experience with YFU Student Exchange. Our daughter participated in a "one school term" experience in Canada. She was placed with a beautiful family who provided her with a memorable experience of Canadian life and culture. So much so, she didn't want to come home. Pamela and Melanie from YFU exchange were professional and provided great communication and support through the process. They settled our nerves, with regular contact, while allowing our daughter to take responsibility of the her great adventure through different stages of the exchange. We highly recommend YFU Student Exchange to other families thinking of this experience.

Hello, My name is Asha I did an exchange to Belgium for a year when I was 15. It's pretty hard to sum up this experience because there's just so much you want to talk about, best time of my life says it pretty well! I loved meeting the other like minded teenagers from all over the world who become my family. I moved host families once due to complication in the family but after that i was placed with the most amazing family who took care of me and where so interested to learn about my country. Schooling and lifestyle was so different to my home life which just made everything so exciting and new. learning the language is hard but if you get practice before you depart you'll be fine. If your looking at this and you think this would be something for you, it isn't for everyone but encourage so much to just go for it. Live a big life even if your just 15 🙂

As a former YFU exchange student, I can say this was one of my most important experiences. YFU is a reliable, trustworthy organisation with many years of experience uniting people from all over the world.

I was an exxhange student as a youth and it changed my life, positively and irrefutably. My daughter opted to venture to Argentina of her own volition decades later with the same ideals in mind: to open her mind to a diverse and beautiful world in a quest for empathy. She, too, had a thrilling and enriching experience. I can't recommend YFU highly enough for those with an open mind seeking something far beyond the limiting back yard.
