Chile is one of South America’s most compelling and geographically extraordinary exchange destinations – a country that stretches nearly 4,300 kilometres from the world’s driest desert in the north to Patagonian glaciers in the south, with volcanic peaks, fjords, wine valleys, and the Pacific coastline in between. For Australian and New Zealand students who want a South American exchange with a slightly different character from Brazil or Argentina, Chile offers a more compact, stable, and geographically spectacular alternative.
Chilean culture blends Spanish colonial heritage with indigenous Mapuche traditions and a strong contemporary identity – proud, warm, fiercely loyal to family and friends, and deeply attached to the natural environment. Santiago is a modern, dynamic capital city; but YFU placements span the regions, and the Chile of Valparaíso, the Lake District, Atacama, or Chiloé is quite different from the capital.
Chilean family life is close-knit, warm, and centred on shared meals and extended family gatherings. Chileans are loyal and generous to people within their circle – and becoming part of a Chilean family means being genuinely included in that circle from early in your exchange. The Chilean concept of peñas (informal social gatherings with music, food, and conversation) and the culture of weekend asados (barbecues) give family life a social rhythm that exchange students come to love.
The natural environment is central to Chilean identity in a way that parallels Australian outdoor culture, giving students from both countries an immediate point of connection. Skiing in the Andes, surfing on the Pacific coast, hiking in Patagonia or the Lake District – the range of outdoor experiences available during weekend and holiday travel is unmatched in South America.
Spanish is the language of the exchange. Chilean Spanish has its own distinctive accent and vocabulary – widely considered one of the faster and more colloquial Spanish dialects – which can be a challenge at first but becomes a genuine point of pride once mastered. No prior Spanish is required, and YFU provides pre-departure language preparation.
Chilean secondary schools (Enseñanza Media) cover students aged 14–17 and run from March to December, aligned with the southern hemisphere calendar. The curriculum covers Spanish Language, Mathematics, Sciences, History, Geography, Arts, Physical Education, and English. Chilean schools offer both scientific and humanities tracks in the final two years. School culture is generally warm and socially inclusive, and extracurricular activities including sport, arts, and student clubs are common. Many schools have a strong community service culture.
In almost every school in Chile students wear uniforms, both in public and private schools (school uniforms are not included in the program fee). Over the year, students study a variety of subjects with their classmates. School is the place where you meet new friends, enjoy different activities and have fun – while studying!
There is no language requirement to apply for an exchange to Chile. Spanish is the official language of Chile. It is preferred that students start to learn Spanish before arrival.
Family plays a central role in Chilean life. Families are very close and love to spend time together. Sundays are often family days and families enjoy doing activities all together and exploring the diverse and beautiful countryside.

Chilean Spanish is known for its speed and colloquial vocabulary – it is one of the more challenging regional accents for Spanish learners – but full immersion builds conversational ability steadily, and most students achieve solid communication within 2–3 months.
Chile follows a southern hemisphere calendar, running March to December. This makes scheduling a year or semester program relatively straightforward for Australian and NZ students managing home school calendars.
