Student exchange program to Paraguay for Australian & NZ students

Maiteí Live & Study in Paraguay

Paraguay is South America’s most genuinely undiscovered exchange destination – and for students who want an experience completely unlike anything their peers at home will share, that is precisely its appeal. A landlocked country at the heart of the continent, Paraguay is one of the world’s few genuinely bilingual nations: Spanish and Guaraní (an indigenous language) are both official languages, and most Paraguayans switch between them fluidly in daily conversation. This linguistic reality – unique on the YFU network – gives a Paraguay exchange a cultural depth that no other South American destination can replicate.

Paraguayan culture is warm, family-centred, and shaped by a blend of Spanish colonial heritage and Guaraní indigenous tradition that has produced something entirely its own. Paraguayans are proud of their country in a quiet way, and exchange students who arrive with genuine curiosity consistently find themselves welcomed into family and community life more deeply than in more internationally well-known destinations.

Life as an exchange student in Paraguay

Paraguayan family life is close-knit, communal, and deeply warm. Families typically include extended relatives who are frequently present, and the exchange student becomes part of this broader circle quickly. Tereré – a cold herbal drink consumed through a metal straw, shared communally throughout the day – is one of the most visible social rituals of Paraguayan life and one of the first ways exchange students begin to feel part of the culture.

Paraguay’s climate is subtropical – hot and humid in summer, mild in winter. The natural environment includes the Chaco (one of South America’s most ecologically significant wilderness areas), the Paraguay and Paraná rivers, and the Jesuit Missions (a UNESCO World Heritage site) that represent one of the most remarkable experiments in colonial-era history.

Spanish is the primary language of school instruction, and no prior Spanish is required. Guaraní words, phrases, and rhythms are woven through everyday Paraguayan Spanish, and exchange students who learn some Guaraní expressions make a strong impression on host families and communities. YFU provides pre-departure language preparation for both Spanish and some Guaraní basics.

School in Paraguay

In Paraguay, the school year typically runs from February to November, with a mid-year break in July, allowing students to enjoy significant holiday periods during the summer. High school, known locally as “educación media,” spans three years, following six years of primary school, and includes both general education and vocational training subject areas.

A comprehensive curriculum encompasses subjects such as Mathematics, Natural Sciences, History, Geography, Spanish, Guarani (the indigenous language of Paraguay), and English. Additionally, there’s a strong emphasis on social and civic education, aiming to foster well-rounded, globally aware individuals.

Paraguayan secondary schools (Bachillerato) cover students aged 15–17 and run February to November, aligned with the southern hemisphere calendar. The curriculum covers Spanish Language, Mathematics, Sciences, Social Studies, English, Arts, and Physical Education. School culture is generally warm and socially inclusive. Class sizes can be large in urban schools. School uniforms are standard. Guaraní language education is integrated into many schools as part of Paraguay’s bilingual national curriculum.

Language RequirementS

There are two official languages in Paraguay: Guaraní and Spanish. We encourage students to start learning Spanish before they depart for their program.

Family Life in Paraguay

Family life in Paraguay is rooted in tradition and community, with extended families often living close to one another, fostering a strong sense of belonging and support. Teenagers in Paraguay typically enjoy a mix of modern and traditional activities, including participating in family gatherings and local festivals. Sports, especially football, play a significant role in their daily life, alongside other outdoor activities that take advantage of the country’s diverse landscapes.

Exchange students are quickly integrated into the host family’s daily routines and cultural practices, allowing them to experience the warmth and hospitality that Paraguayan families are known for, offering a unique opportunity for cultural exchange, language learning, and forming lasting connections.

Volunteer Programs

The Community Service (Volunteer) Program in Paraguay allows young people aged 18 to 26 to discover their potential and develop their skills by providing community development assistance with social work, school support, environmental issues, and more.

The program includes host family placement, NGO (non-government organisation) placement, support from YFU Paraguay staff and volunteers, two weeks of intensive Spanish classes on arrival, and arrival, mid-year, and end-of-year orientation.

Common questions about exchanging to Paraguay

We’ve got some quick answers to common questions to help get you started with your Paraguay Student Exchange Program.

Guaraní is one of Paraguay’s two official languages – an indigenous language spoken by the majority of the population alongside Spanish. Most Paraguayans switch between Spanish and Guaraní fluidly in daily conversation (a practice called Jopará). You don’t need to learn Guaraní, but picking up basic words and expressions makes a significant impression on host families and communities, and is a genuinely unique linguistic experience.

Tereré is Paraguay’s national drink – a cold herbal infusion (typically with yerba mate and medicinal plants) consumed through a metal straw (bombilla) from a shared cup (guampa). Sharing tereré is one of Paraguay’s most important social rituals – offered to guests, shared among friends and family throughout the day, and a genuine expression of hospitality. Most exchange students adopt the habit within the first week.

Because Paraguay is genuinely undiscovered as an exchange destination. You will have an experience that is entirely your own – and the depth of welcome that Paraguayan families extend to exchange students, who are rare and genuinely valued, often exceeds what students find in more internationally trafficked destinations. The bilingual Spanish-Guaraní cultural context is unique on the YFU network.

YFU has operated exchanges in Paraguay for many years and places students with carefully screened host families in established communities. Paraguay is a generally safe country for exchange students within the context of their host family and local community network. YFU provides comprehensive pre-departure safety and cultural preparation.

Paraguay follows a southern hemisphere calendar, running February to November. This aligns broadly with the Australian academic year and makes scheduling a year or semester program relatively straightforward.

Yes. A student visa is required for programs over 90 days. YFU provides full documentation and step-by-step guidance through the Paraguayan visa application process as part of your enrolment.

I did an exchange year with YFU to Switzerland in 2024-2025, and it was the best experience of my life. The support I received from YFU throughout the whole process was amazing and made everything seem a lot less overwhelming than it felt at times. I got to make best friends all over the world and learn a new language. I highly recommend YFU to anyone thinking about doing an exchange!!

Our family hosted a Norwegian student for a year through YFU. The student fitted in with the family so well, and we received all the support we needed from YFU. We now have a lifelong friend in Norway

Our daughter Hannah has travelled to the USA with YFU for 12 months, living with a local family and attending high school there. She has loved every minute of the experience. Her host family welcomed her as one of their own, and she has had incredible opportunities, great experiences, and made lifelong friends. We are very grateful to YFU for making this possible.

If you are thinking about hosting an international student, this organisation is great! They do genuinely support the host family as well as the student, guiding everyone to have a positive experience in Australia. Hosting gives you the best opportunities to explore your own backyard and see it with new eyes! While all students (and host families) are different, YFU's works with them to develop their understandings and realistic expectations. YFU families come in all shapes and sizes and mine is now spreading further around the world with each young person who stays awhile in my home but much longer (maybe forever) in my thoughts and beyond.

Our family have had the privilege to host 4 young people so far. We really enjoy hosting and now have 4 new family members. We count them as sons/daughters, brothers/sisters. Our first 2 students have returned to visit us and our family has had the opportunity to visit 1 of our students and meet their family. YFU support us through the process and have always been there to help when we needed it.

We’ve now hosted two wonderful students through YFU and loved every minute. Our family has welcomed both a Norwegian and an Argentinian student, and they fitted in straight away. The support from YFU as a host family has been excellent, and we always felt comfortable reaching out with questions.

Hosting has given our children lifelong friendships — my younger son enjoyed having “sisters” at school, and my older son is even visiting our Norwegian student’s family while travelling in Europe.

Our family had a great experience with YFU Student Exchange. Our daughter participated in a "one school term" experience in Canada. She was placed with a beautiful family who provided her with a memorable experience of Canadian life and culture. So much so, she didn't want to come home. Pamela and Melanie from YFU exchange were professional and provided great communication and support through the process. They settled our nerves, with regular contact, while allowing our daughter to take responsibility of the her great adventure through different stages of the exchange. We highly recommend YFU Student Exchange to other families thinking of this experience.

Hello, My name is Asha I did an exchange to Belgium for a year when I was 15. It's pretty hard to sum up this experience because there's just so much you want to talk about, best time of my life says it pretty well! I loved meeting the other like minded teenagers from all over the world who become my family. I moved host families once due to complication in the family but after that i was placed with the most amazing family who took care of me and where so interested to learn about my country. Schooling and lifestyle was so different to my home life which just made everything so exciting and new. learning the language is hard but if you get practice before you depart you'll be fine. If your looking at this and you think this would be something for you, it isn't for everyone but encourage so much to just go for it. Live a big life even if your just 15 🙂

I was an exxhange student as a youth and it changed my life, positively and irrefutably. My daughter opted to venture to Argentina of her own volition decades later with the same ideals in mind: to open her mind to a diverse and beautiful world in a quest for empathy. She, too, had a thrilling and enriching experience. I can't recommend YFU highly enough for those with an open mind seeking something far beyond the limiting back yard.
