Student exchange program to Czechia for Australian & NZ students

Ahoj! Live & Study in Czechia

Czechia sits at the geographical and cultural heart of Central Europe a country of extraordinary architectural beauty, a complex and fascinating history, and a contemporary culture that blends Slavic warmth with Central European pragmatism. For Australian and New Zealand students looking for a European exchange destination that is less obvious than France or Germany, Czechia offers everything: depth of culture, genuine immersion, and an experience your peers at home are unlikely to share.

Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, but YFU placements span the whole country from Brno in Moravia to regional towns offering students a version of Czech life that is far more authentic than the tourist capital. YFU Czechia has a well-established exchange network and a genuine affection for students from Australia and New Zealand.

Life as an exchange student in Czechia

Czech family life is independent-minded, warm in its own quiet way, and shaped by a strong sense of personal space and household routine. Czech families value initiative and self-sufficiency in their exchange students, they want you to feel part of the family, but they also respect your independence. The ‘unwritten rules’ of the household take a few weeks to learn, but Czech families are patient and welcoming once the initial adjustment period passes.

Czech people are multicultural by heritage and genuinely curious about life in Australia and New Zealand. Ice hockey and football (soccer) are central to Czech sporting culture and provide ready common ground. The café culture, hiking culture (particularly in Bohemian and Moravian highlands), and castle-rich landscape give weekends and holidays a character entirely their own.

Czech is the language of the exchange. It’s a Slavic language with a different grammatical structure from English, but a phonetically consistent writing system that makes reading learnable quickly, daily immersion accelerates conversational progress. Czech language skills are unique and stand out on any university or professional application.

YFU Czechia offers a range of specialised programs in addition to the standard full-year exchange – details of these are available directly from YFU.

School in Czechia

Most YFU students attend a Gymnázium, an academic secondary school that prepares students for university. Subjects include Czech, Mathematics, Sciences, History, Geography, Foreign Languages, and the Arts. English is taught at all schools, with many also offering German, Spanish, French, or Russian. The school year runs from September to June, with classes typically held from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Czech schools have a structured and respectful environment, with students traditionally standing when teachers enter and leave the classroom. Public schools do not require uniforms, and classes usually have 25–30 students. Schools understand that exchange students are still learning Czech and are supportive, offering flexibility and extra help where needed.

Students are expected to be motivated, maintain good academic standards, and participate fully in school life.er leaves.

Schools understand that our students will not come with much knowledge of the language and are flexible if you need extra help in class.

Language RequirementS

There is no language requirement to go on exchange to the Czech Republic but basic knowledge of the Czech language before arrival is recommended

Two language camps take place during the beginning of the exchange, once on arrival and once after students have settled with their host families.

Family

Every family has developed a routine for how they live. The rules are not written, so it is important to watch and learn what your family does and at what times. Czech families are very multicultural, love to watch ice hockey, soccer and are proud of their culture.  Czech people value initiative and independence, yet still want students to feel like a part of their family.  Czech people are often open and love to communicate with each other and learn about people from Australia and New Zealand.

Specialised Programs

YFU Czech Republic offers Specialised Programs in the following areas:

Common questions about exchanging to Czechia

We’ve got some quick answers to common questions to help get you started with your Czechia Student Exchange Program.

There is no language requirement to go on exchange to the Czech Republic but basic knowledge of the Czech language before arrival is recommended. Czech is a Slavic language quite different from English but its phonetic writing system is learnable quickly, and daily immersion builds conversational ability steadily.

Two language camps take place during the beginning of the exchange, once on arrival and once after students have settled with their host families.

YFU places students across the country in Prague, Brno, and regional towns throughout Bohemia and Moravia. Regional placements often provide a more immersive and authentic experience than the capital. Your specific placement is matched to your profile.

Most YFU students are placed in a Gymnázium (academic/university-prep school) or a Střední škola (combined academic-vocational school). Czech schools are academically rigorous, particularly in sciences and humanities, and the depth of instruction often stretches Australian and NZ exchange students productively.

Czech families value initiative, independence, and genuine curiosity about their country and culture. They want exchange students to feel like part of the family, but also respect personal space and self-sufficiency. Arriving with some Czech language preparation and a willingness to observe and adapt to household routines makes a strong impression.

A great deal. Czechia has an extraordinary density of castles, historic towns, national parks, and hiking trails. Ice hockey and football are central to Czech sporting culture. Prague is one of Europe’s most vibrant cultural cities. YFU activities and camps provide additional opportunities to connect with other exchange students during the year.

Yes. A long-stay visa (Type D) is required for programs over 90 days. Czechia is part of the Schengen Area. YFU provides full documentation and application guidance as part of your enrolment.

I did an exchange year with YFU to Switzerland in 2024-2025, and it was the best experience of my life. The support I received from YFU throughout the whole process was amazing and made everything seem a lot less overwhelming than it felt at times. I got to make best friends all over the world and learn a new language. I highly recommend YFU to anyone thinking about doing an exchange!!

Our family hosted a Norwegian student for a year through YFU. The student fitted in with the family so well, and we received all the support we needed from YFU. We now have a lifelong friend in Norway

Our daughter Hannah has travelled to the USA with YFU for 12 months, living with a local family and attending high school there. She has loved every minute of the experience. Her host family welcomed her as one of their own, and she has had incredible opportunities, great experiences, and made lifelong friends. We are very grateful to YFU for making this possible.

If you are thinking about hosting an international student, this organisation is great! They do genuinely support the host family as well as the student, guiding everyone to have a positive experience in Australia. Hosting gives you the best opportunities to explore your own backyard and see it with new eyes! While all students (and host families) are different, YFU's works with them to develop their understandings and realistic expectations. YFU families come in all shapes and sizes and mine is now spreading further around the world with each young person who stays awhile in my home but much longer (maybe forever) in my thoughts and beyond.

Our family have had the privilege to host 4 young people so far. We really enjoy hosting and now have 4 new family members. We count them as sons/daughters, brothers/sisters. Our first 2 students have returned to visit us and our family has had the opportunity to visit 1 of our students and meet their family. YFU support us through the process and have always been there to help when we needed it.

We’ve now hosted two wonderful students through YFU and loved every minute. Our family has welcomed both a Norwegian and an Argentinian student, and they fitted in straight away. The support from YFU as a host family has been excellent, and we always felt comfortable reaching out with questions.

Hosting has given our children lifelong friendships — my younger son enjoyed having “sisters” at school, and my older son is even visiting our Norwegian student’s family while travelling in Europe.

Our family had a great experience with YFU Student Exchange. Our daughter participated in a "one school term" experience in Canada. She was placed with a beautiful family who provided her with a memorable experience of Canadian life and culture. So much so, she didn't want to come home. Pamela and Melanie from YFU exchange were professional and provided great communication and support through the process. They settled our nerves, with regular contact, while allowing our daughter to take responsibility of the her great adventure through different stages of the exchange. We highly recommend YFU Student Exchange to other families thinking of this experience.

Hello, My name is Asha I did an exchange to Belgium for a year when I was 15. It's pretty hard to sum up this experience because there's just so much you want to talk about, best time of my life says it pretty well! I loved meeting the other like minded teenagers from all over the world who become my family. I moved host families once due to complication in the family but after that i was placed with the most amazing family who took care of me and where so interested to learn about my country. Schooling and lifestyle was so different to my home life which just made everything so exciting and new. learning the language is hard but if you get practice before you depart you'll be fine. If your looking at this and you think this would be something for you, it isn't for everyone but encourage so much to just go for it. Live a big life even if your just 15 🙂

As a former YFU exchange student, I can say this was one of my most important experiences. YFU is a reliable, trustworthy organisation with many years of experience uniting people from all over the world.

I was an exxhange student as a youth and it changed my life, positively and irrefutably. My daughter opted to venture to Argentina of her own volition decades later with the same ideals in mind: to open her mind to a diverse and beautiful world in a quest for empathy. She, too, had a thrilling and enriching experience. I can't recommend YFU highly enough for those with an open mind seeking something far beyond the limiting back yard.
